International Women’s Day 2019 – Celebrating 9 Women In Business
As you may already know, today, 08th March 2019 is International Women’s Day. It’s a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all around the world.
I’m blessed to know and be surrounded by so many amazing women. I’ve decided, in honour of International Women’s Day, to dedicate today’s blog post to nine amazing women in business who I’m blessed to know. They are each successful in business and have all inspired and contributed to my entrepreneurial pursuit.
Please note that the list is in alphabetical order and not in order of achievement or any specific ranking. Have a read and you’ll understand why I’m celebrating them all today.
Barbara, Founder of Afmena Events
Barbara is the founder of an award-winning London based Elegant Floral and Event Design Company. As well as running a successful business, Barbara is also a mother of three children and a preacher’s wife. Despite the many hats that Barbara wears, she’s always sharing her knowledge and expertise with other aspiring businesswomen.
Barbara was one of the first people I connected with when I started my business Something Sweeter. She believed in my capabilities at a very early stage in my business when I still wasn’t even sure of myself.
If you have an event forthcoming and need a stylist that’ll bring your vision to life, contact Afmena Events.
Christina Adesina, Co-Founder Shades of Beauty Live
Christina and I are literally family! I’ve known this woman for most of my life and it’s been such a privilege witnessing her journey and growth as a businesswoman.
Christina and her sister Grace are the Founders of Shades of Beauty Live (SOB Live). Launched in the summer of 2018, SOB Live is an annual two-day hair and beauty expo in London.
SOB Live was birthed from a lack of quality shows for women of colour on a grand scale. More brands are becoming available online and showcasing their diverse product ranges. SOB Live aims to bring these brands to life by giving them a platform to meet customers and introduce them to new ones. The show also boasts live panel discussions, beauty influencers, yolebribrities and more.
Shades of Beauty Live 2019 will be taking place on August 31st and September 1st at Royal Horticultural London. Pick up your tickets for the expo at shadesofbeautylive.com.
Iyisha Rocke, Founder of Kingdom Guide UK
I met Iyisha during my first year of university. At the time there weren’t many black people at the university so we naturally gravitated towards each other and became friends almost immediately. Iyisha was actually the one who helped me find my first church in Birmingham. It was at the church New Jerusalem that I first gave my life to Jesus Christ.
Iyisha ak.a. globetrotter has literally been to more countries around the world than I can name. She is the founder of Kingdom Guide UK a platform that helps users share, promote and discover Christian events throughout the UK. Think Eventbrite for Christians! Such a fantastic platform. What I love about her business is Iyisha is able to run it remotely from anywhere around the world – #goals!
Metta Francis, Founder of Nails by Mets
Metta and I met at College but it was at University that our friendship began. We were also bump buddies with our first children and gave birth within weeks of each other. Metta has a work ethic like none other. It’s no surprise to me that she’s been able to achieve so much success with her business Nails by Mets.
Metta is a multi-award-winning London based nail technician/artist and the founder of Nails by Mets. Nails by Mets provide mobile nail services; pamper parties, events, editorial shoots and more. Metta has worked with every brand you can imagine; from Barry M and Starbucks, to Boux Avenue and River Island. Metta has worked with them all! Metta’s portfolio is exceptional and Metta is a true master of her craft. If you’re after nail services, check our Nails by Mets

I’ve known Michelle for most of my life. We went to the same Secondary School, College and University. Michelle is one of the most talented, hard-working and focussed people that I know!
I remember years ago when Michelle started her blog SceneTV. She was so passionate about her vision for creating a platform that promoted diversity and inclusion in television and film. Michelle remained consistent with her content through the highs and lows. Fast forward all these years and she’s collaborated with BFI, Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures, HBO UK and the Screen Nation Awards just to name a few!
To celebrate International Women’s Day, Michelle co-produced a short film shining a light on three black creatives. Watch the video here.

Victoria Dele, Founder of VOLD PR, VOLD Fashion and Mummy Means Business Podcast
Victoria is a wife and new mum to a beautiful baby boy. However, this hasn’t stopped Victoria pursuing entrepreneurial success. While on maternity leave Victoria launched Mummy Means Business Podcast. The Podcast consists of interviews with ten different mums who are also successful in business. It’s a platform for women to share their journey into their world of work as well as detail their experience of motherhood. I had the pleasure of being interviewed for an episode which you can listen to here.
Victoria also runs a PR agency called VOLD PR which is a strategic public relations and social media company. Additionally she’s the Founder of VOLD Fashion a website specialising in Vintage and designer women’s clothing.
These are just a few inspirational women in business that I chose to honor today, however, there are many more I could speak about.
