As a soon to be mum of 4, I know how expensive it can be to raise a family. Between groceries, utilities, and other household expenses, the bills can quickly add up. Fortunately, there are plenty of simple and easy ways to save money quickly on home expenses. In today’s blog article, I share 15 simple money-saving tips to help you reduce your home expenses and keep more money in your pocket.

1. Make your own cleaning products

Cleaning products can be expensive and often contain harsh chemicals that are not good for the environment or our health. Instead, consider making your own cleaning products using natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. There are many recipes available online that are easy to follow, and you can save a lot of money in the long run.

2. Switch to LED light bulbs

LED light bulbs are more energy-efficient and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. While they may cost more initially, they can save you a lot of money in the long run because they use less energy and last up to 25 times longer.

3. Use a slow cooker

Using a slow cooker is a great way to save money on your grocery bills because you can buy cheaper cuts of meat and vegetables and make delicious, healthy meals with minimal effort. Slow cookers also use less energy than traditional ovens which can save money on your utility bills.

4. Shop at discount stores

Discount stores like Aldi and Lidl are a great way to save money on groceries. They offer high-quality products at lower prices than traditional supermarkets. I switched from Tesco to Aldi in 2016 when I started my debt-free journey and I haven’t looked back since! Consider doing some of your weekly shopping at these stores to save money on your grocery bills.

5. Cancel subscriptions you don’t use

Many of us subscribe to services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Spotify, which we use sparingly. Look at your monthly subscriptions and cancel any you don’t use or need. You’ll be surprised at how much money you can save.

6. Use cashback apps and websites

I recently posted about some of the best cashback apps in the UK, so I won’t labour the point here. But there are many cashback apps and websites available that can help you save money on your purchases. Sites like Quidco and TopCashback offer cashback on purchases made through their websites, while apps like CheckoutSmart and Shopmium offer cashback on specific products. Use these tools to save money on your grocery bills and other purchases.

7. Buy in bulk

Buying in bulk is a great way to save money on grocery bills, especially for non-perishable items like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and canned goods. Consider buying these items in bulk at discount stores or wholesale stores like Costco or Makro.

8. Cut down on meat consumption

As good as it tastes, meat is expensive. Consider reducing your meat consumption to save money on your grocery bills. I’m not for a second to become vegan or vegetarian, but consider having one or two meatless meals a week to save money.

9. Take advantage of free activities

Many free activities are available for families, such as local parks, museums, and community events. Take advantage of these free activities to have fun with your family without spending a lot of money. In a recent blog post, I shared 30 free date night ideas that will inspire you.

10. Cut and style your own hair

Going to the hairdresser can be expensive, especially if you have to take your children with you. Why not try doing your own hair at home? YouTube has plenty of tutorials that can teach you how to style your own hair, and you’ll save a lot of money in the process. Just be careful not to give yourself a mullet. I’ve been doing my hair at home for years and it’s saved me a fortune.

11. Meal plan and batch cook

Meal planning and batch cooking can save you a lot of money on groceries and reduce food waste. Take some time each week to plan out your meals and make a grocery list based on what you already have in your pantry. Then, cook larger portions of meals and freeze the leftovers for later. This way, you’ll always have a meal on hand when you need more time, and you’ll be less tempted to order takeout or go out to eat. Plus, you can save money by buying ingredients in bulk and taking advantage of sales and discounts.

12. Shop around for better deals on household bills

Take some time to shop around for better deals on your household bills, such as gas, electricity, and broadband. Many providers offer new customer discounts or introductory offers, so you could save money by switching to a different provider. Trust me; you will not be rewarded for your loyalty.

Use comparison sites to compare prices and find the best deals, and don’t be afraid to negotiate with your current provider for a better deal. It’s also worth considering changing your payment method, as some providers offer discounts for paying by direct debit. With some research and negotiation, you could save hundreds of pounds a year on your household bills.

13. Use a clothesline

Tumble dryers can be expensive to run, especially if you use them frequently. Instead, consider using a clothesline to dry your clothes. It’s better for the environment, and your clothes will smell fresher too.

14. Shop out of season

Buying clothes and household items out of season can save you a lot of money. For example, buy winter coats in the summer or Christmas decorations after the holidays. You’ll get great deals and save money in the process.

15. Use energy-saving appliances

Energy-saving appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators use less energy than traditional appliances, which can help you save money on your utility bills. When it’s time to replace your appliances, consider investing in energy-saving models.
